The Public Works Department for the city of Hernando has a mission to continuously improve and enhance the quality of life for the residents of Hernando and its visitors.   We strive to, through effective planning and viable infrastructure, provide high quality service and to facilitate public health, safety, and careful stewardship of our resources. The Department of Public Works is committed to a partnership with the Mayor that supports the policies, goals, and objectives that achieve a clear vision and forward-thinking momentum that keeps Hernando a well-kept secret.   

 

Hernando is known for its iconic water tower – Hernando actually has five functional water towers, or above ground storage tanks.  The city currently has three water treatment plants.  There are 25 sewer lift stations that transport waste to the DCRUA wastewater treatment facility.  One hundred and fifty miles of roads cover 25.7 square miles and comprise Hernando proper.  Hernando is filled with traffic lights, city buildings and common areas that make it the picturesque small town that feels like home.  

 

Public works is responsible for: 

  • Water – providing a safe and sustainable resource of drinking water, maintaining, installing and repairing water mains and water meters, monthly water meter readings, maintaining water wells and overseeing the maintenance of water plants  
  • Sewer – installing and maintaining sanitary sewer mains and manholes, maintenance of lift stations, ensuring working flow of sewage to treatment plant  
  • Streets/Traffic Lights – installation and maintenance of street signs and traffic signs, overseeing construction of new streets, maintaining and resurfacing existing streets, maintain all city traffic lights with the exception of the MDOT owned lights on Hwy 51 
  • Storm water management– ensuring drains are free of debris, maintain grates  
  • City buildings – maintenance of all city buildings  
  • Grass – mowing all roadside Right-of-Ways as well as numerous other city owned property  
  • Trash – overseeing and negotiating the contracted garbage & recycling service  
  • Brush – scheduled removal of trees/brush or other large items from homeowners or city property  

 

Reporting a concern

If you have a concern to report that needs to be handled by the Public Works Department. Please call City Hall at 662-429-9092 and report your issue to one of the utility clerks. They will make a work order and send it to Public Works Department. Common issues brush not picked up, water leaks, storm drains not draining, potholes, and traffic signs missing or damaged.
